Lesson 7 Motivation and Games

In Allen’s chapter on Learner Motivation, two of his observations interesting: motivation “controls our perception” (i.e., what we decide to pay attention to) and it “fuels our persistence“. It explains our human propensity for growth and change.

In effective e-learning, designers shouldn’t automatically assume or depend on high learner motivation. We sure hope it’s there; however, we know that often, topics presented in compliance training or even certification courses may not be on the learner’s list of high-interest topics. To address that, we as designers need to design the course to the LML: the Least Motivated Learner. We need to think about ways to make the e-learning experience as motivating and compelling as possible.
