Lesson 1 Welcome & E-learning Basics

As you undoubtedly are already aware, the field of e-learning is evolving quickly as widely available technologies make more and more sophisticated learning opportunities available over the web. Successful instructional designers have the knowledge and skills to harness these technologies to achieve their full potential.

Framework for this course: In chapter 5 of Michael Allen’s text, he discusses three priorities for training success:

  1. Ensuring that learners are highly motivated to learn,
  2. Guiding learners to appropriate content, and
  3. Providing meaningful and memorable learning experiences.

These three priorities are used to guide the framework of this course. In the next 10 weeks, we will cover launching e-learning efforts, types of learning environments and architectures, how people learn, cognitive processing, motivation, navigation, design processes, instructional approaches and activities, and we’ll touch upon common tools and technologies used in e-learning.

Before diving into this week’s content, please make sure that you have read and understood the Course Introduction, which gives you an overview of the course and its approach, requirements, and expectations.

In this first lesson, you familiarize yourself with the course site and read the first chapter in each textbook (as well as Chapter 3 in Allen).
