The trend now is towards integrating solutions for informal just-in-time e-learning, and many LMSs are looking at how to incorporate more Web 2.0 tools like wikis, blogs, and robust learner profiles. Also worth noting is the movement towards massive open online courses (MOOCs). Coursera, EdX, Udacity, Khan Academy, and others are offering new models for presenting higher education courses and professional development solutions on a grand scale.

⭐Shar’s Note: I’m rather partial to the edX platform because they offer an open source version, OpenedX that you can find a vendor to host for you if you’re not able to set it up yourself. Once you learn the basics of how to populate an edX course, there are extensive guides on how to further customize the environment/experience.
