Lesson 3 The Learner and Instructional Design
3-3 eLearning Examples
Take a few minutes to explore some of the e-learning examples listed below (some great, some not so great). As you view the different programs, think about motivation for the courses, how the interface and navigation are set up, how the content is structured and what the level of activity is. Think about what the designer intended in terms of learning objectives and techniques to encourage engagement.
Connect with Haji Kamal
A decision-making scenario for the US Army
This e-learning is an all time favorite ‘soft-skills’ e-learning example, though it was flash-based! It really nails the elements of attention, engagement, motivation, and contextualized learning; it also does a great job of leveraging ‘shadow learning’ – information picked up from the activity’s environment rather than explicitly taught.
The Haji Kamal simulation was developed by Cathy Moore, the designer who created the flowchart discussed in Lesson 2, and you can read more about the analysis and design behind it on her blog with a longer video simulation.

⭐Shar’s Note: Most e-learning authoring tools will also provide a few e-learning demos using the tool. The newest software I’ve encountered is Pebl Pro. And here are a couple of e-learning in their sample library.
