Lesson 10 Putting It All Together

10-1 E-Learning 2.0

A Note about Web 2.0 and E-Learning 2.0

Web 2.0 is a phrase that encompasses the changes to the Internet that enable web users to easily create and share their own content. Consider the user-generated content of Flickr, YouTube, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Stack Overflow, Pinterest, tiktok, and many others. Using the Internet is no longer primarily for passively accessing content – it’s also about generating it and sharing it.

E-learning 2.0 takes advantage of Web 2.0 technologies by encouraging more social learning settings (group projects, field trips, case studies) and sets the stage for the learner to create content. This type of learning is also known as informal learning. In turn, the instructor’s role focuses more on mentoring, coaching, motivating, and guiding learners to create the experiences they feel best prepare them for their job or education

Mobile devices facilitate E-learning 2.0. They make it easy for users to create and share images, audio, and video. They make learning anytime-anywhere much more practical. Wi-fi networks and high-bandwidth cell phone networks make using phones and tablets practical in almost any location, which enables learners to engage in the experience when and where they see fit. As e-learning developers, we should keep this in mind and look for opportunities to use social learning and user-generated content.
