Common Names and Terms

E Terms

Words in red should not be used. Alternatives are provided.

The terms below are preferred in material Cultivate Learning produces, except when a specific project or funder calls for different terms.

Early Achievers

early learning environment

Use this term instead of classroom. Consider the project and audience. If referring to an actual classroom, it might be appropriate. However for most early learning settings, early learning environment or program is more appropriate.

early learning educator

Use educator for short if the context has established the early learning topic.

early learning program

Use program for short if the context has established the early learning topic.

early learning environment

When referencing the physical space.

EarlyEdU Alliance ®

Full name should be used in the first appearance in a document. After that, use EarlyEdU for anything related to courses and teaching (EarlyEdU faculty, EarlyEdU courses, for example). Any reference to the Alliance part of our work (Alliance state teams, Alliance members, for example) is just Alliance. A reference that encompasses both should use the full name.

e-book

ECE

Acceptable as an abbreviation for early childhood educator or early childhood education. Spell out on first reference so readers know which way you are using the acronym. Don’t mix its use. Spell out if the abbreviation has the potential for confusion.

educator

Preferred term but can be alternated with teacher.

e-learning

email

engage

Engage parents or partner with parents, but not involve.

enter

For dialog boxes in technical writing, use type instead. Enter is acceptable in other contexts.
