Multilingual Media Approach

As often as possible, we strive to use media that is in the audience’s home language. Typically, we aim to provide videos in English, Spanish, and Somali for our various products. The project charter will guide you to what is needed for the product you are engaged with.

Partnering with the project’s media producer and the media liaison is important as you plan for media that is relevant and meaningful. There are several possible strategies or approaches to consider when creating multilingual media. Learn more processes for a multilingual video approach in the Multimedia Toolkit on the Resource Development Portal.

A few strategies to consider include:

  1. Interviews: recreate or re-record in different languages. If the interviewee is multilingual, consider recording the interview in multiple languages to begin with.
  2. For videos that include voiceover (VO) in English: If the video is owned/produced by Cultivate Learning, work with media to determine if VO can be re-recorded in Somali or Spanish.
  3. If the preferred video is in English, and does not belong to Cultivate: make original video available, and provide contextual information on slides and in notes.
  4. Consider what additional visual aids can be created in place of or instead of video.
