How are Book exports important for accessibility?

Pressbooks allows you to export your book in PDF and EPUB formats, which you can make available for download from your book’s homepage.  It is recommended that you make the EPUB, PDF (for digital distribution) and PDF (for print) formats available from your book homepage, so that readers using assistive technology or with other accessibility needs have options in choosing the best format for them.  The Making Your Book Accessible & Inclusive chapter of the Pressbooks User Guide includes important information on these two export types. Different formats have different advantages when it comes to accessibility:

  • EPUB
    • Reflowable
    • Change font size text & color contrast
    • Supports vector images, metadata, and CSS styling
  • PDF
    • Maintains original visual layout
    • Available offline
    • Good for printing. note the difference between the PDF (for digital distribution) and PDF (for print) in the Making Your Book Accessible & Inclusive chapter of the Pressbooks User Guide.

Checking the Accessibility of your Exports

We recommend using the free, open source tool, Ace by DAISY, to check the accessibility of your EPUB export.

We recommend using UW Accessible Technology’s Checking PDFs for Accessibility resource to check your PDF exports.
