6 The Scheduling Process in PWR

Our goal is for all of our instructors to be successful, and we will always attempt to give each instructor a teaching assignment that supports that goal.

We understand that each instructor’s situation is unique and each instructor will have individualized needs and/or preferences that may change over time. For this reason, we ask PWR instructors to complete a time preferences form each quarter.

The PWR class schedule is created within certain constraints, including the university’s (very long) timeline for creating the quarterly Time Schedule as well as the limited availability of classrooms especially during peak times. We are required to distribute courses throughout the day and are limited to how many courses we can offer during peak times.

In assigning instructors to particular sections, we will always give highest priority to instructors’ program coursework (as ASEs, instructors are students first) and to instructors’ DSO-approved accommodations.

Note: Instructors are not expected to disclose details regarding their needs or preferences beyond indicating what they are requesting. If they are comfortable doing so, they can use general categories in describing their circumstances (e.g., caretaking responsibilities, commute, other commitments, health reasons, etc.). In making assignments, we will take into consideration all factors communicated through the time preferences form. We will always attempt to match every instructor with one of their preferred times, but due to the limitations of the Time Schedule process, each quarter there may be instructors who are not assigned one of their preferred times. If instructors need disability- or health-related workplace accommodations, they need to go through DSO to get the accommodation officially approved so that their assignment can receive the highest priority. We can only guarantee that we will give highest priority to conflicts with instructors’ program coursework and their DSO-approved accommodations.

For those interested in teaching hybrid courses: Instructors must have taught the class at least once before being assigned to a hybrid section. First priority is: availability during the scheduled hybrid course time; Then: length of time since you have last been able to teach a hybrid section in PWR; Then: experience with the course (number of times you have taught the class).
