Savvy Start

Title: Creating a Pollinator-Friendly Habitat

Brief summary: this optional training will be offered to adults working in a corporate office environment. It is a single course which will encourage employees to add plants conducive to a thriving pollinator population. Participants will learn about plants, the importance of adding native plants to home gardens, and some threats faced by pollinators.

Explanation of how peers’ feedback was used to revise prototype/storyboard: I received lots of feedback, and while some was not relevant to the scope of the project, or didn’t fit with the overall vibe of the project, I did incorporate some feedback from both of my reviewers. To start, I added a time estimate at the beginning of the course to let learners know how long they can expect to spend on/in the course. Next, I added additional resources that will take students out of the course, if the want to learn more than what is scoped for this course. I also added some audio clips, at the suggestion to use the multimedia principle. I created a mock-up with more emphasis on visuals, at request (with the software I used, the mock-up actually took me less time than when I was only using PowerPoint for my initial prototype). I also created an entirely new assessment from what was in my original prototype, using the suggestion from Prof. Scott.

Summary of a few things learned from the Savvy Start activities: I found it very valuable to received feedback. Working on the first prototype kind of felt like being on an island: I had no idea if I was going down the right path or not, or if what I was creating would make sense and flow well to anyone other than myself. The positive feedback was very validating in this way. The suggestions for changes and improvements made me think about what I was doing, and the choices I had made, and ponder other ways of doing things that might be more engaging for learners. Also, the ideas from others made it feel like I was able to reap results from a brainstorming session that didn’t actually happen. I also hope that feedback I gave to my peers was helpful to them, and enjoyed looking for ways I thought their projects could be even stronger. Everyone brings their own unique ideas and perspectives to the table, and this diversity can be immensely helpful in creating something that works for everyone (or at least, for a lot of people).
