Proseando comes from the word “prose” and it means literally “chatting” in Portuguese. It is commonly associated with stories and conversations that Brazilians have in the interior of the country, in a relaxing and story-telling manner.
This book is an on-going project created to accompany conversation language classes in Portuguese with university students with an intermediate to advanced level of proficiency. Even though most of the questions assume an intermediate command of Portuguese, there are also novice, advanced, and superior level questions, following the 2012 ACTFL Oral Proficiency Guidelines for each level. For more information about the these proficiency guidelines, please visit the link: https://www.actfl.org/educator-resources/actfl-proficiency-guidelines
Although this material was created with Portuguese conversation classes in mind, this book could also be used for other purposes as well, such as supplementary material for other Portuguese classes or as a reference for Portuguese instructors teaching private classes.
Proseando – Portuguese Conversation presents several topics for conversation, including every-day topics: hobbies, sports, likes and dislikes, family and friends, and food. It also offers options for discussion about current issues, such as the protection of the Amazon Rainforest and its Indigenous populations, for example. The content of Proseando mirrors the content of units from Bate-Papo: An Introduction to Portuguese, available at: https://uw.pressbooks.pub/batepapo/
Each chapter is divided into six parts as follows:
- Aquecimento/Warm-up – An image with 3 warm-up questions and a tongue-twister.
- Perguntas para Conversar/ Conversation Questions – Approximately 20 questions preceded by a short list of vocabulary and expressions.
- Situação/Role-play – A set of role-plays for the intermediate, advanced and superior levels.
- Dicas de Gramática/ Grammatical Tips -Brief tips on grammar structures, common mistakes and language transfers from English and/or Spanish.
- Imagem para Discussão/ Image for Discussion – An image for an open-ended conversation.
- Recursos Adicionais/Further Resources – A song and two films accompanied by discussion questions, in addition to links for other Open Educational Resources.
