Time Management

Deadlines

We all have busy lives and meeting deadlines can be a challenge. But with a bit of planning, you can find ways to successfully manage your coursework. When you receive the syllabus for a course, one of the first things you can do is look at the course schedule. Take note of all the deadlines in your own calendar. If you notice any conflicts ahead of time that will prevent you from completing assignments by the due date, let your instructor know right away so they can work with you to make accommodations.

Organization Tools

There are many ways to keep track of your coursework and it’s important to find the right combination that works for you. Setting aside dedicated time at the very beginning of the course and at the start of each new week to plan what specific tasks you will complete and when is one of the best ways to set yourself up for success.

In general, the following things can help you stay organized:

  • A central location where you can clearly see all your major deadlines. Keep one up-to-date calendar or planner that shows you when all your assignments are due. This will help you plan for the long-term. Sample tool: Google calendar
  • A way to keep track of individual tasks and check them off when they’re done. Break down large assignments into smaller steps (often called “chunking”) and check them off as you go. This will help you plan for the short-term. Not only does chunking keep your workload manageable, but also it feels great to track your progress by checking off tasks on a to-do list!

Example

Imagine it is Sunday night and you have to read three articles by Friday night. You can create a separate task for each article. Perhaps you look at your calendar along with the other commitments you have for the week and decide to read one article on Monday morning, one on Wednesday afternoon, and one on Thursday morning.

  • A way to remind yourself about tasks or upcoming due dates. Schedule automated reminders at the beginning of a course or at the start of each new week. This is a good way to take some of the pressure off yourself and be sure you won’t forget about important tasks or due dates. Sample tool: “Reminders” app on your cell phone

Stress

Stress is an inevitable part of life–sometimes it can be beneficial and propel you toward your goals, while other times it can prevent you from being your best self. It’s important to be aware of how stress is impacting you in your day-to-day life and prioritize your wellbeing. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Take breaks. Don’t forget to give yourself time to rest and engage in activities you enjoy. Everyone needs time away from routine tasks and obligations in order to be productive. Even a 10-minute break for every hour that you spend doing coursework can be beneficial. You could get a snack, drink some water, take a walk, or chat with a friend. Just like you schedule tasks on your to-do list, you can schedule breaks, too!
  • Figure out what stress management strategies work for you. Having a way to calm your body and mind can help alleviate stress. What activities help you release stress? Moving your body, taking a moment to focus on your breathing, and spending time in nature are all ways to manage stress.
  • Seek support. If you’re feeling stressed, talking to a trusted friend, classmate, or family member can be a big help. Don’t forget that your instructor is also there to support you. If you are really struggling with coursework or time management, reach out to someone on your teaching team.

Choose one assignment that you have to complete as part of your coursework. If you can, select a final project or assignment with multiple components that is due a few weeks into the future.

  • Create a list of individual tasks you need to do in order to complete the assignment.
  • Look at your calendar. Assign each task a date and time when you plan to complete it. Think about the following:
    • What other commitments are on your calendar? Take them into consideration and create a plan that feels manageable.
    • How long do you think it will take you to complete each task? Make your best guess and block out that length of time on your schedule. Figure out where you will be able to work uninterrupted.
    • Try to leave a couple days open before the final due date in case you need extra time.
    • What will you do to acknowledge and celebrate your hard work along the way? How will you keep yourself motivated?
  • Schedule reminders to help you stick to your plan.
