Course Tools and Technology

Online education encompasses a variety of tools and platforms. At EarlyEdU Alliance, we build and design our online courses to be used with the Canvas LMS. In addition to Canvas, we use a few other technology tools in our courses to expand the feature offerings. The following information represents our standard practices. Your experience in a specific course may vary based on the institution hosting the course and your instructor’s teaching practice in alignment with the institutional goals.

Course Content Tools

Course Book

Pressbooks IconIn an online course, the lecture content may be provided via audio, images, interactives, video, and text. This course uses Pressbooks technology to provide the lecture content as a course book that may be viewed online as a webbook or downloaded as a digital PDF that you can highlight and annotate. This course book has been integrated in to the Canvas LMS to provide a seamless experience, but you may also use the course book outside of the LMS environment. In this course book, links to external sources are marked with Opens in a new tab and will open in a new browser tab. You are currently viewing a page in the Participant Guide Pressbook.

Reflection Point

From time to time, you may be presented with sections like this asking you to pause to reflect on the knowledge you’ve used been exposed to in the course content. You do not have to record the results of these reflection points, but taking notes on these areas may help you complete assignments later.

Interactive Content

H5P LogoSome content is in an interactive format. These interactives are built on a using H5p. The results from the interactions are not saved and have no impact on your grade for the course. These interactives may be viewed full-screen or in a separate browser window. If you are using a mobile device certain interactives may display better for you in a separate window.

Activity Debrief

After some interactives, you may see an activity debrief section like this one. This information is similar to what an in-person instructor may discuss with you.

Why it matters
Some activities are aimed at providing you an equivalent experience to an in-person exercise. Taking the time to debrief from the activity gives you the opportunity to digest the experience.

Video Content

EarlyEdU makes every effort to use video content with available captions; some YouTube videos will offer auto-generated captions. If captions are not available, you will often find a transcript. For participant created videos, we currently do not offer the ability to auto-generate captions.

Video Debrief

Most videos are followed by a video debrief similar to this section. You may be presented with a question and the choice to click and reveal a possible answer.

Your interaction with this component is not saved and does not affect your grade for the course. This information is merely for your educational purpose.

Assignment Types

Let’s take a closer look at the types of assignments you’ll encounter in EarlyEdU courses. Most assignments are practice-based, meaning they require you to directly apply concepts from the course to the early childhood classroom.

Knowledge Check

The knowledge check or quiz is a formative assessment that asks basic review questions on the lesson material and provides feedback on your answers. You are encouraged to pause the quiz, by navigating away, to refresh your memory by re-watching videos or re-reading material.

Quiz questions may be of different types:

Matching
Pair terms with definitions
Multiple Answer

Multiple Choice

CORP Discussion Assignment

You will be given a discussion prompt to respond to with members of your community of reflection and practice group. The aim is to create a safe, collaborative discussion that enhances professional knowledge and self-awareness in the group. You are encouraged to continue the dialogue by answering questions your group writes in response to your original post.

Discussion Assignment Example

  1. Read the scenario of Ash’s family who are new to the program and speak a different language at home.
  2. Write your initial post summarizing how you would build a relationship with the family.
  3. Respond to two classmates with a conversation-extending question and follow-up idea to what they have posted. Distribute your responses so everyone gets feedback.

Video Assignment

Video assignments are usually completed by using Coaching Companion. Some video assignments will require you to record yourself with your own device (camera or phone), edit (trim for content/length), and then upload to Coaching Companion.

Video Assignment Example

  1. Video record yourself and your child or small group of children during a learning activity. Use the strategies discussed in class for creating rich and engaging conversations: joint and shared attention, following the child’s lead, and using the CAR strategies.
  2. Edit the clip to between 3 and 5 minutes long.
  3. Upload the clip to Coaching Companion.

Applied Assignment

An applied assignment is a summative assessment to use in your own early childhood program demonstrating what you learned in the course. You may be asked to create something new, reflect on your current performance, or improve an existing practice.

Supporting Language Development Activity Assignment Example

  1. Create an activity you could use to support the language development dual language learners in any domain.
  2. Include elements from all three support categories described in the lesson.

Reflection Assignment

In a reflection assignment, you will apply your knowledge of the concepts learned in the lesson from the videos or reading material.

Reflection Assignment Example

  1. Reflect on how the findings in the assigned video viewings changed or confirmed what you know about child development.
  2. Use the following questions to guide your reflection.
    1. How does the educator react to the parent’s questions? Why?
    2. What other relationship-based practice would be applicable in the situation?

Assignment Rubrics

All graded assignments use a rubric for scoring the performance of completion of the assignment tasks. All rubrics have the same four ratings and include a description of what is required for the rating.
