7 Faculty Assessment and Development
Faculty assessment, development, and promotion is an important part of how we maintain the excellence of our program. There are a variety of tools in place to provide you with feedback and support.
Student Evaluations
Students evaluate both large and small group instructors at the conclusion of each block. Instructors are rated on a scale of 1 to 6 on the following:
- The instructor’s effectiveness in teaching the subject matter
- Student confidence in instructor’s knowledge
- Instructor’s enthusiasm
Evaluations are collated by the UWSOM Evaluations Administrator and sent to you by email a few weeks after the conclusion of the block. Access to your evaluations are also made available to the following persons:
- UWSOM Curriculum Leadership
- Block Director
- Block lead at your campus
- Foundations Dean at your campus (outside Seattle only)
Yearly Evaluations
The Spokane Foundations Dean (Janelle) will meet with you yearly to review progress and set goals for the coming year. These are strictly development sessions designed to get you thinking about your career trajectory and future growth opportunities. Some pre-reflection is required including contributions you have made in the last year, obstacles you have encountered, and professional goals.
Peer-Peer Small Group Observation (P2PO)
Peer peer small group observation (P2PO) is a yearly requirement for Spokane block faculty. The program is intended to be an engaging and relatively painless way to elevate your facilitation skills. Here’s how it works:
- Each Faculty member is assigned a partner for P2PO
- Each person observes and is observed in small group by their partner once per year academic year
- There is a P2PO form to use as a guide for your observations
- Pre-brief before the session, is there anything specifically you’d like help with or to be observed?
- Debrief (20 min or so) after the session, reviewing the observation form together
- The completed observation sheet is between you and your partner only. You may include it in your evaluation portfolio at your discretion
Advancement/Promotion
The University of Washington has well-defined academic tracks, ranks, and titles. The appointment process and definition of academic ranks and titles can be found in the Faculty Code Chapter 24 Appointment and Promotion of Faculty Members. New faculty join at the rank of Clinical Instructor. They are eligible for promotion to Clinical Assistant Professor after 3 years. Additional details can be found in the faculty appointments and promotions guide. For more specific information on WWAMI faculty appointments see WWAMI Faculty Appointments.
