WHO CAN USE THE VAN?

VAN USE REQUIREMENTS

Interprofessional UW Health Science student groups participating in healthcare/health professions-related service learning or community engagement activities. Events must provide clinical care, health education, mentorship, or resources to underserved or underrepresented populations.

Current Van Services

The services that the van team can provide to community members depend on the credentials and experience of the preceptor supervising the event. At events, preceptors must only practice and supervise care that is within their scope of practice.

Currently the van offers services including but not limited to:

  • Physical exams
  • Foot care
  • Skin and wound care
  • Vital sign check
  • Resource referral and navigation
  • Health education

IP SLAC APPROVAL

If you are starting a new interprofessional service project that has not been approved by the Interprofessional Service Learning Advisory Committee (IP SLAC), your group must submit a project application to the IP SLAC before obtaining approval to use the van.

  • Click here for a current list of IP SLAC-approved projects.
  • Click here for information on IP SLAC and the IP SLAC application process.

Please fill out the Van Use Request Form if your project meets the above requirements.
To complete this form, you will need to gather the following information:

  • Date
  • Event Location
  • Participating Health Sciences Schools
  • Services/Care rendered
  • Community Partner (name/email/phone)
  • Student Event Lead (name/email/phone)
  • Supervising Preceptor/Volunteer Provider (name/email/phone)
  • Van driver (name/email/phone)
  • Plan for parking
  • Plan for an interprofessional reflection activity
  • Plan for recruiting and training student and provider volunteers

CANCELLATIONS

Cancellations should be made a week prior to the scheduled outreach, when possible. In the event of a cancellation, other groups will be notified for use based on the order of request.

A NOTE ABOUT PRIORITIZATION OF VAN USE

In the case of competing requests for van use on a specific date, to ensure equity, prioritization will be based on these variables in descending order:

  1. Date of request (first come, first served)
  2. Priority for regular events (e.g., every third Tuesday of the month)
  3. Consideration will be given to special events like Health Fairs

If you have questions on any requirements or use, please contact the UW CHSIE Program Manager, Ashley McPeek at mcpeekas@uw.edu.
