Interprofessional Service Learning Advisory Committee (IP SLAC) Approval

The Interprofessional Service Learning Advisory Committee (IP SLAC) is the governing body that is responsible for reviewing and approving interprofessional service learning and advocacy projects for the University of Washington. The group supports students in creating and developing innovative and sustainable service learning and advocacy projects, which are rooted in core principles of equity, partnership, and mutual benefit. Additionally, the IP SLAC ensures that all participants have appropriate liability coverage and adequate training / licensing to carry out responsibilities associated with service learning projects.

Approval is required for all interprofessional health sciences service projects where a UW group of students is acting in their “UW student capacity” (as opposed to their individual/personal capacity). If a reasonable person would think that a student was “representing” the UW while participating in such an activity, the student would be considered to be acting in a UW student capacity.

The steps for applying as a new interprofessional service learning project are as follows:

  • Students can meet with the UW IPE Program Manager Ashley McPeek (mcpeekas@uw.edu), to discuss the new project and go over the IP SLAC application.
  • Students then complete pertinent sections of the IP SLAC application and submit them to the IP Program Manager Ashley McPeek (mcpeekas@uw.edu) for review.
  • The applications are then reviewed by IPSLAC committee members and recommendations are made. Students integrate feedback, submit updates to the Faculty Advisor for a signature, and email the signed copy to the IP Program Manager Ashley McPeek (mcpeekas@uw.edu)
  • New applications are scheduled to be presented at the Interprofessional Service Learning Advisory Committee (IP SLAC) for review. If changes are requested at the meeting, students will implement changes and resubmit. If no changes are requested, the project is approved.
  • Once approved, the IP SLAC committee reviews and signs the application.
