Drilling Materials

There are various tools one might use to put a hole in something. The appropriate tool for the job depends on the material hardness. This section includes instruction on drill bits and punches as well as proper use of a hand drill and drill press to create holes.

Performance Checklist 

Drilling and Tapping

  1. PP: Wear safety glasses.
  2. Hand drill
    1. Select the right size drill bit
    2. Stabilize the object being drilling
    3. Ensure that nothing is below the object being drilled
    4. Position the drill so it is 90 degrees to the surface
  3. Drill press
    1. Name parts: table, chuck, feed lever, depth stop, variable speed control
    2. Adjust speed of drill press, only when wheel is rotating.
    3. Secure bit by tightening each hole on the chuck. Removes chuck key before turning on drill press.
    4. Describe how to adjust table height.
  4. Tapping
    1. Select the appropriate size drill bits for tap and for through hole.
