24 Trautman Router

Aim for Smooth and even edges

General Technique Tips

  1. Prep
    • Set the Trautman to the appropriate height to match your height. The cone should be located near or below your xyphoid process.
    • Select the proper grinding, sanding or buffing cone for your material based on:
      • the radius of the edges to be ground or smoothed
      • and the “courseness” of the wheel
    • Do not make adjustments when the wheel is in motion.
    • Adjust the vacuum hood close to the undersurface of the object being grinded.
    • Stand in front of the machine.
  2. Only use the lower quarter of the cone or the drum sander when sanding.
  3. Start the machine
    • Begin with the course cone to remove material to your trimlines and create non-curvy edges
      • bevel the inside edge to about 45′
      • work around to the outside edge and bevel to about 60′
    • Turn off the machine and switch to the fine cone, repeat the sequence from inside to outside.
      • bevel the inside edge at about 60′ and 30′
      • work around to the outside edge and remove sharp edges
    • Turn off the machine again and switch to the polishing cone.
      • bevel the inside edge so it feels completely smooth.
      • smooth outside edge
