29 Skiving foam

Aim for tapered or beveled edges with gradual decrease in thickness.

Materials/Tools:

  • Foam: plastizote, aliplast, pelite, and puff
  • Scissors
  • Shoe machine or Trautman router
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Patterns

Step 1

Use scissors to cut the material to a general shape. See patterns on the next page. It is helpful to cut the material slightly larger than you need so that you have a little room for error.

Step 2

Use the heavy grit on the shoe machine or Troutman router to capture the general shape.

Step 3

Smooth the edges.

Hold the material with one hand and use the second hand to place pressure against the band or the cone.

  • Pay special attention to the amount of pressure you place on the material with the second hand – play around with more or less pressure to determine the appropriate amount.
