22 Shoe Machine

Aim for even and symmetrical edges

Landis S-500 Shoe Machine

Before Using the Shoe Machine

  • Check the area to be sure people are alert and wearing PPE.
    • Use dust mask
    • Use ear protection
    • Use safety glasses
    • Close toe shoes should be worn in all lab areas.
  • Ensure all body parts, clothing, hair, jewelry and other objects are clear of the work area and other moving parts before starting the machine and engaging its moving parts.
  • Give the work your undivided attention. Looking around, carrying on a conversation and horseplay are careless acts which can result in serious injury.
  • Make sure that a system is set for segregating ferrous (steel) and non-ferrous (aluminum, brass, other soft metals) materials to prevent fires. Aluminum and steel should not be ground on the same wheel. Aluminum embedded in a steel wheel can create excess heat and the wheel can explode when a steel tool is ground on the same wheel.

General Technique Tips

  1. Prep
    • Draw the trimlines or the end shape that you want to achieve.
    • Consider the radius of the drum relative to the radius you want to achieve.
  2. Only use the lower quarter of the drum when sanding.
  3. Start the machine
    • Use the flat surface of the drum to make the edges even and symmetrical.
    • Use the radius to round broad corners.
  4.  Maintenance
    • Empty dust drawer once a week.
    • Clean dust collection system thoroughly once a month. Vacuum dust collection bag with shop-vac or remove and use air hose.
