19 Sewing Machine Trouble Shooting
Problem: Why is the thread bunching-up under my fabric?
“Birdnesting” occurs when there is no tension on the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. This is easily corrected by rethreading the machine, following the threading path carefully and making sure the thread is fully engaged in the tension mechanism.
Problem: The upper thread on my machine keeps breaking.
Solution: Try these corrections: (1) Rethread the machine; (2) Remove and reinsert a new needle, long slot toward the left.

Problem: The needle broke!
Problem: The lower thread on my machine keeps breaking.
Solution: This is usually caused by a problem with the bobbin case. Check the bobbin and bobbin case. Try removing the bobbin and cleaning the area of any stray threads or lint. When you replace the bobbin pull on the thread. The thread should pull easily and smoothly.

Problem: On the Pfaff, the threads are not creating a stitch. Everything appears to be threaded correctly. What is wrong?
- Check that the thread is routed appropriately
- Check the bobbin case
- Check that the hook drive is engaged in the safety clutch.
Solution: To reengage the hook drive, gently tilt the machine back. Push the pin in with a screwdriver to release the latch. Turn the balance wheel in sewing direction until you hear the latch snap in place in the clutch. Turn the balance wheel in reverse and remove the jammed thread. Now the machine is ready for operation again.
