10 Cutting Tools and Equipment

There are a number of tools that you will use to cut materials. You will use the hacksaw to cut metal, the jigsaw and bandsaw to cut plastics, foams and wood, and the cast saw to cut plaster bandage, plastic, and composite materials. Below are some of the cutting tools we use in the lab.

When using these tools, aim to safely cut the material to desired dimension.

Cast saw – uses a sharp, small-toothed blade rapidly oscillating or vibrating back and forth over a minimal angle to cut cast material. Also used to cut plastics and composites.
Cast saw
Hacksaw – used to cut metal, such as pipe, steel strap, metal, cast-iron and bolts. Also used for PVC or other hard materials.
Hack saw
Hand saw – used to create cut large objects and can cut fiberglass, drywall or wood.
Hand saw
Jigsaw – a handheld power tool used for cutting curved lines, circles, and unique shapes into a range of materials, including thin metal, laminate, plastic, ceramic tile, and wood. The thickness of the blade dictates the radius of the curved cuts.
Jig saw
Bandsaw – uses a long round continuous blade (a band) that rotates on opposing wheels to cut a range of materials, including laminate, plastic, and wood. The band saw includes the following parts:

  1. frame
  2. table
  3. blade
  4. guides
  5. footbrake
  6. guard
