Fastening Materials

This section includes information on equipment and the devices that are used to fasten materials together, such as hammers, screwdrivers, rivets, screws and adhesives.

Performance Checklist 

Fastening:

  1. PPE: Wear safety glasses, tie long hair back, no dangling clothing/jewelry.
  2. Name things: copper rivet, burr, speedy rivet, drill bit, drill bit gauge, countersink, ball peen hammer, diagnoal cutters
  3. Stabilize material and uses appropriate body mechanics when drilling.
  4. Copper rivet and burr are smooth on both sides, no sharp edges (that might scratch skin).
  5. Place the burr next to the non-metallic material and form new head to secure the burr.
    1. Do not need to use burrs when riveting metal to metal
    2. Always use burrs when riveting metal to leather, plastic or any non-metallic material
  6. Describe how to remove rivets without ruining original material.
  7. Countersink: knows when to use countersink tool.
  8. Describe how to select the appropriate size drill bit.
