18 Pfaff Sewing Machine

General Technique Tips

Instructions on 1) Threading the needle, 2) Changing and threading the bobbin case, 3) Stitch length regulation, 4) Reverse sewing, and 5) the Safety clutch

1) Threading the needle

Pull the thread from the reel and lead it through thread retainer 1, then through guide 2, thread retainer 3, clockwise around and between tension discs 4, over bar 5, around thread controller disc 6, through thread check spring 7 and around hook 8.

From there lead the thread through guide 9, from the right through the hole in take-up lever 10, down and through thread guides 11, and through hole of the needle bar.

Then thread the needle from left to right and pull about 5 cm of thread through the needle eye.

(Depending on the properties of the thread it may be necessary to deviate from the above instructions for threading the upper thread retainer.)

2) Changing and threading the bobbin case

Turn the balance wheel to bring the take-up lever to its highest position. Open the bed slide, raise the latch and remove the bobbin case.

Insert the full bobbin into the bobbin case so that when you pull the thread the bobbin turns in the direction indicated by an arrow. Draw the thread into the slot and under the tension spring so that it protrudes from the spring by about 2 inches. Insert the bobbin case base and close the latch. Then close the bed slide.

3) Stitch length regulation

Turn knurled nut clockwise for a shorter stitch, or counterclockwise for a longer stitch. Stitch length is indicated on the scale in millimeters.

4) Reverse sewing

To sew in reverse, push the feed regulator lever upwards

5) Safety clutch

If thread jamming occurs in the hook raceway, the hook drive is automatically disengaged. To reengage the hook drive, tilt the machine back. Push the pin (S) back with a screwdriver to release the latch (K). Turn the balance wheel in sewing direction until you hear the latch snap in place in the clutch. Turn the balance wheel in reverse and remove the jammed thread. Now the machine is ready for operation again.
