9 Measuring Tools
The following measurement tools are commonly used in P&O practice.
Flexible retractable tape measure
> Primarily used for taking circumference and length measurements. |
|
Metal retractable tape measure
> Used for taking length measurements |
|
Straight edge ruler
>Used for taking length measurements |
Straight edge ruler |
Folding ruler
>Used for length measurements, such as when measuring the walking distance for the TUG |
|
Carpenter square
> Multi-use measuring instrument used for length measurements, checking right angles, and marking cut lines |
Carpenter square |
Combination square
> Multi-use measuring instrument which is primarily used for ensuring the integrity of a 90° angle, measuring a 45° angle, measuring the center of a circular object, find depth, and simple distance measurements |
Combination square |
Schmidt gauge
> Used to measure the inside circumference |
|
Bubble level, also called spirit level
ML gauge
> Used to measure the medio-lateral or antero-posterior dimensions of objects or body parts. |
|
Transtibial/transfemoral length gauge
> Used to measure length of the residual limb |
|
Spring Caliper
> precision measurement tool used to measure and transfer inside and outside diameters of objects. |
|
Firm-joint Caliper | |
Use the straight edge ruler to determine the length when using inside/outside calipers
Divider | |
VAPC spring-loaded caliper
> Used to measure the AP and ML dimensions for the transtibial socket |
|
Slide Caliper
> |
|
Brannock device
> Used to measure the length and width of a foot for adults |
|
Ritz stick
> Used to measure the length and width of a foot for adults and children |

Drill bit gauges are used to select drill bit based on circumference of the screw or the rivet. notice that the drill bit gauges are unique to fractional or numbered bits.
Thread gauge
> Used to measure the threads on screws |
|
Goniometer | |
Angle finder – used to measure inclines (i.e., inclinometer) – Can find an app on phone |
