28 Propane Torch
The propane torch is used for sealing edges and making holes in Dacron Tape. It can also be used for softening plastics for heat modifications.
PPE
- Remove all loose outer clothing and confine long hair.
- Heat resistant gloves should be worn when handling the heated plastics.
- Close toe shoes should be worn in all lab areas.
- Wear eye protection.
Environmental/Ventilation Controls
- Position materials within 15 cm or 6″ of the fume hood and turn on the ventilation system (switch is located by the main lab door).
- Close the lab windows when using the ventilation system.
- The flame should be out of range of unintended flammable objects and heated objects should not be set down on flammable surfaces.
General Tips
- Rods used to burn holes should be set on a nonflammable surface till cool.
- The torch should be turned off with firm, but not tight rotation of the valve control. Turning the knob too tightly will mar the surface of the valve and cause the valve to leak when temporarily shut off during use.
- After use, the torch should be cooled and removed from the propane source and the propane bottle should be stored in the fire cabinet.
