1 E-Learning Proposal

The proposal lays the foundation for the Analyze phase of the ADDIE model by analyzing job seeker needs (verification challenges, online scams) and defining a target audience (family, friends, job seekers) to establish learning objectives (verification skills) for a safe job search.

Part 1: Project Scope
Title

JobWatch: Establishing a Company’s Authentic Website

Project Scope

The course consists of four modules, and I will be developing a storyboard for the first module, Establishing a Company’s Legitimacy.

Part 2: Background
Problem Statement/Identified Performance Gap

During my three years as a trainer for job board fraud analysts, I witnessed firsthand the challenges associated with identifying fraudulent job listings. Even with human moderation, some scams slip through the cracks. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Scam Tracker underscores this concern. In the first quarter of 2023 alone, reported losses from job scams reached nearly $840,000, a staggering 250% increase compared to 2022.

A key factor contributing to job seeker vulnerability is difficulty in verifying company legitimacy. This training aims to empower learners with the skills needed to assess a company’s website and identify its authenticity. By equipping job seekers with these critical skills, they’ll be better equipped to navigate the online job market with confidence and avoid falling victim to scams.

Project Objectives (strategic/organizational)

According to UNSW Business School experts, one of the top reasons people fall victim to scams is a lack of awareness. With e-learning, it will be a valuable tool in addressing the issues of job seekers falling victim to scams for several reasons:

  • E-learning provides accessible education to a wide audience, including job seekers with diverse backgrounds and locations.
  • Individuals can access e-learning materials at their own pace, making it easier for them to acquire knowledge on recognizing and avoiding job scams.
  • Practical scenarios allow job seekers to apply their knowledge and enhance their skills in identifying and avoiding scams.
  • E-learning can be accessed remotely, allowing job seekers to participate in anti-scam training from the comfort of their homes.
Target Audience

My family, friends, and co-workers who are seeking job opportunities.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, learners will be able to classify 80% of the posted company websites (whether they are legitimate or not) by establishing the authenticity and reliability of the sites.

  • Identify techniques for verifying a company’s website’s legitimacy through a Google search.
  • Identify the common domain red flags being used on potentially fraudulent websites.
  • Utilize advanced website verification skills to confidently evaluate the legitimacy of company websites during job search.
Outcomes Assessment (measurement of strategic and learning objectives)
  • Knowledge Assessment: A combination of multiple-choice questions and scenario-based activities will assess learners’ understanding of key concepts like identifying domain red flags and differentiating legitimate from potentially fraudulent company websites.
  • Skill Application: A post-training Google search will ask learners to apply their newly acquired skills. This will involve analyzing real-world job postings and identifying the most likely official company website associated with the listing.
  • Learner Feedback: A post-training survey will gather feedback from learners on their experience, the clarity of the training materials, and their perceived confidence in verifying company websites after the training.
Part 3: Design Approach
Format

Asynchronous Self-paced

Explanation of Format Choice

This format engages job seekers in different time zones or priorities. This will allow them to take the course whenever they can without the worry of meeting a deadline or meeting with an instructor.

Storyboarding and Prototyping

I will utilize design tools like Canva or PowerPoint to create a storyboard for the first module, “Establishing the Company’s Authentic Website.” This storyboard will visually represent the flow and key elements of the module as it would appear when developed in Articulate Rise 360.

Acquisition of Learner Needs/Interest Information

Aside from conducting interviews with my target audience, I will also get it from studies conducted by job boards like LinkedIn or Indeed. This will help me get a better understanding of their needs and interests.

Team

I am working solo on this project

Part 4: Implementation
Context (where, when, how)

After developing the course (post-course certification), learners can take it anytime they can.

Approval/Organizational Buy-In

Not needed for this project as all materials that will be used are publicly available.

Time/Budget Constraints
  • Limited Availability: As I work full-time, I’ll be dedicating my non-working hours to develop this project. This means I’ll need to carefully manage my time to meet the deadline.
  • Free Resources: Fortunately, the design tools I plan to use (Canva or PowerPoint) are already available on my laptop, eliminating any software-related costs.
Resources Needed/Available

BBB scam studies, Job postings from job boards, E-learning platform to develop the course and other sites that will be useful when investigating company legitimacy and identifying common domain red flags

Relevant organizational considerations

Include the expertise and accuracy of the information that will be shared. My three years as a trainer for a well-known job board have equipped me with the necessary expertise to create this course. During my tenure, I not only trained analysts on identifying fraudulent listings but also collaborated on developing and refining moderation processes. This experience aligns perfectly with the organizational need to equip learners with the skills needed to identify legitimate company websites and avoid online scams.

Technical Support Expectations/Plan
  • Design Tools: My primary design tool for storyboarding will be Canva, which requires a reliable internet connection. However, I’ve anticipated potential disruptions by having mobile data as a backup solution in case of an outage.
  • Leveraging Free Resources: For this project, I’ll be maximizing Articulate Rise’s free resources to create a comprehensive storyboard. This includes diving deep into their valuable offerings like the community forum, FAQs, and YouTube tutorials. These resources will equip me with a thorough understanding of Rise 360’s functionalities, allowing me to design a storyboard that capitalizes on the platform’s strengths.
  • Utilizing the Free Trial for Feedback: Once the storyboard is finalized, I’ll leverage Rise’s free trial to develop a working proof. This initial version will serve as a springboard for gathering feedback before finalizing the project. By collecting valuable insights during the trial period, I can ensure a polished final product that effectively engages learners.
