Layer 1 – Content box – Overview Notes are . . . the description of the scene, the body (if a death investigation) and any items of physical evidence noticed during the preliminary scene survey. the written record of on-scene activities, the description and location of physical evidence and people at the scene. used to provide relevance of the evidence when combined with videography, still photography and sketching. detailed and continuous. factual, any material that is opinion or hearsay should be identified as such. Layer 2 – Content box – Notification Include both the date and time the crime is reported. Note the type of crime committed. Identify the person who reported the crime. Record the case number. Layer 3 – Content box – Description Include the specific location of the scene. Record the weather, including temperature, precipitation, and humidity. Identify the vehicles present and their location at the scene. Buildings and other major structures are described along with their location relative to the crime scene. Note any transient or conditional characteristics of the scene. Layer 4 – Content box – Individuals Include all names and roles of first responders and law enforcement personnel. Include names and descriptions for all non-law enforcement individuals at the scene. All individuals’ purpose at the scene is identified. Detailed description of location and orientation of people. Layer 5 – Content box – Evidence Include the name (if possible) and description of all items of evidence, who found them, and who handled them. Process of handling of evidence is provided.
