Topic and Goals

This course will be an online, asynchronous course that a cohort of students will complete during their first semester of law school to prep them for the spring recruiting and hiring season and summer internships. The focus of the course will be to:

  • Provide guidance regarding the professional expectations of legal recruiters
  • Provide an overview of the hiring timeline and general practices of legal employers
  • Instruct students about the best practices for professional documents (resume and cover letter primarily)
  • Demonstrate how to identify KSAs in job descriptions and match them to student experience
  • Overview of the STAR Method for developing impactful resume bullets
  • Provide guidance on writing impactful cover letters
  • Provide guidance on how to research legal career pathways

Proposed Elements

The course will be broken down into the following components:

  • Law Career Services Office Overview
  • Career Pathways with a JD
  • Hiring and Recruiting Timelines/Practices for Legal Employers
  • Best Practices and Industry Expectations During Recruiting Cycles
  • Professional Documents – Resume Basics
  • Professional Documents – Cover Letter Basics
  • Professional Documents – Writing Sample Basics
  • STAR Method & Identifying KSAs
  • Final Tips, Assessment & Submission of Resume & Cover Letter Drafts

Timeline

  • May 26 – Develop Written Content Outline
  • June 2 – Identification of Multimedia Elements – Add to Content Outline
  • June 9 – Modules 1- 4 Built out in Authoring Tool
  • June 16 – Modules 5 -8 Built out in Authoring Tool
  • June 23 – Full Course Built Out in Authoring Tool & Test Run
  • June 27 – Final Presentation @ 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. CST
