3 Work Plan

This work plan embodies the Design Phase of ADDIE by detailing the learning goals, instructional methods, content structure, assessment strategy, delivery format, and supporting materials. It effectively bridges the gap between identifying the performance gap (Analysis) and building the course (Development).

Topic and Goals

Project Topic: Newly hired medical receptionists do not necessarily have a background in medical care and therefore may lack the knowledge required to identify when a patient needs to be immediately seen by a nurse or doctor. Patients presenting with symptoms that are potentially life-threatening should not be registered and then left in the waiting room. We must adequately train new medical receptionists to recognize symptoms that are potentially life-threatening and decide when a patient needs to be taken to the treatment area for immediate care. This project will result in a self-paced, asynchronous training module, complete with an assessment and a job aid.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize potentially life-threatening symptoms.
  • Explain why quick recognition and action is important when dealing with potentially life-threatening symptoms.
  • Identify the proper medical staff members that need to be notified if a patient has potentially life-threatening symptoms.
  • Assess a patient’s presented symptoms and respond appropriately with sound judgment by either proceeding with registration or notifying appropriate medical staff.
  • Follow the facility’s emergency protocols and procedures if an appropriate medical staff member confirms that the patient does require immediate emergency care.

Project Goal: The primary goal of this project is to prevent patients with life-threatening symptoms from receiving delayed care. It is my aim to create a training that can be utilized anytime a new medical receptionist is hired for any of our urgent care facilities by creating an asynchronous, always available, self-paced lesson. The deliverables of this project will be an e-learning training course with assessment and a referenceable job aid.

Proposed Elements

This training will be created with a preset order and flow of content. Participants will begin the training with a video explaining why it is important to recognize and act appropriately if a patient has potential life-threatening symptoms. Next, the participants will engage with a mixture of text, graphics, and videos about life-threatening symptoms, appropriate medical staff to notify and the facility’s emergency procedures and protocols. Participants will then practice making judgement calls in a scenario-based assessment.
