Course Design Standards

Category: Session overview and structure

The session (or lesson) introduction page contains an overview of the session. The content includes a description, the session (or lesson) objectives, and a list or a visual representation of how the content of the session is organized and the different components of the session.

Standard B1: Visual outline

Description

There is a list or visual representation of the components (content, activities, and assignments) found in each session and the criteria to complete the session.

This standard is related to the Universal Design of Learning (UDL) guidelines: Provide options for Executive Functions.

DEI Application

The visual information and session organization structure help learners to set expectations on how the material is organized, see patterns in the learning process and observe the relationships between all the components found in the session. When the components in the course are consistent from session to session, learners with learning and cognitive disabilities benefit from having a structure and clear expectations to follow.
