Shared Goal and Action Plan Skills

Collaborative Partnership Skills for a Shared Goal and Action Plan Session

Shared Goal and Action Plan skills Examples
Motivates Others:  The ability to encourage verbally and non-verbally (smiling, thumbs up, nodding) the thoughts or actions of others to engage and extend learning. A coach helps motivate a coachee during the shared goal and action planning session by encouraging them to share their ideas for their plan.  During the “R” or Readiness section of the SMART plan, a coach can use readiness rulers to assess the coachee’s motivation to work toward their goal. For example, asking the coachee “On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being not ready at all and 10 being ready to implement the goal today, how ready are you to work on your plan?  Or, “…how confident are you to work on your plan?” Or, “…how motivated are you…?”  After asking those questions, the coach asks “What would it take to get you to a (higher number by a few points)?”
Resourceful: Able to find and use different ways to help others achieve their goals. A coach demonstrates resourcefulness during the shared goal and action planning session during the “A” or Action steps component of the SMART plan.  This is a time for the coach and coachee to identify any resources that would be helpful in working on their goal. The coach may, for example, offer to provide them with articles to read or videos to watch.  It may be as simple as helping the coachee to identify peer support or other resources they may be able to find on their own.
Goal Directed Behavior: The ability to set goals that are appropriate, realistic and relevant for one’s job. A coach demonstrates goal-directed behavior during the shared goal and action planning session by stating the purpose of the session at the beginning of the conversation.  They also keep things on track by walking through each component of the SMART plan with the coachee, making sure they complete each one and then summarizing the plan at the end.
Culturally Responsive and Responsible: The ability to demonstrate respect and appreciation for diversity and the cultural values of others. See others’ cultural values and beliefs as opportunities to open windows of learning rather than barriers to learning. A coach demonstrates being culturally responsive and responsible during the shared goal and action planning process by asking the coachee to share their beliefs and values as it relates to the teaching practice they’re focusing on as their goal. The coach allows the coachee to take the lead in the goal setting conversation and has them write or type in their ideas into the SMART plan.
