9 Student Grades and Remediation
Grading and remediation is a key role for the Block Directors. Some blocks end after the UW quarter grading deadline and must use the late grading process.
Submitting Grades
All Foundations block grades are Pass/Fail. The assessment team, Site leads, theme and block leads, and the block directors review the overall performance of the students to determine a grade cutoff for pass/fail. It’s a separate meeting that happens after all of the rescheduled exams are taken and there is a histogram of the block (this is the final post assessment meeting). Once a cutoff is agreed upon, the block director submits grades. The block director is also responsible for emailing all students that fail in order plan for remediation.
To submit grades first check each site’s Canvas gradebook and communicate with the Site Leads and Assessment team to know all the students’ grades.
Use GradePage to submit grades by the UW grading deadline (see the Academic Calendars page and click on the appropriate year to see deadlines). For more information, see and refer students to the Academic Grading Policy and the General FAQs for grading and assessment.
Single late grades can be submitted through GradePage.
Responsibilities:
Block Directors submit grades via GradePage for all students in all 6 regions.
Block Admins none.
Late Grading
If a block ends after the UW grading deadline for a given quarter, a bulk grade change can be done by submitting a Change of Grade request and uploading excel docs with the bulk grades for each WWAMI region. Block Admins can assist as needed.
Block Remediation
Remediation is the process by which students address and rectify a failure in a required block or a lack of competency in one of the threads. Remediation provides an opportunity for students to focus their studies on, and demonstrate competency of, material that they may not have grasped initially. It is designed to ensure that students have been adequately prepared to move forward in the curriculum. See the Remediation web page for annual remediation timelines for students and for more info about the process. See the Block Directors Remediation Checklist for a list responsibilities. (contact somremediate@uw.edu with questions and for more information)
