Through combining ideas of our group discussion about the social justice troop “Radical Monarchs” founded in Oakland, CA in 2014 we put together the ideas of the strength of these young girls through making their ideas heard and supported by the adults in their lives. They, like the monarch, made a journey in order to speak up about the issues that concerned them, which in turn became their curriculum. Through their actions of doing to address issues in their community they made their voices heard about what was affecting them and what mattered to them in order to be part of the change. Claiming “we are here” as part of the community that was in need of visibility and to be changed.
