CM515 Innovation in Construction Book Project
Welcome to the class of 2025’s open-access book about Innovation in Construction. This class project encouraged students in the CM515 to explore topics of their own choosing. There are a variety of studies here, each an exploration in case study form. The first set of cases explores topics of data integration and management, including technologies such as digital twins and Monte Carlo simulation. The second set of cases focuses on construction site and operations monitoring with technologies such as drones and sensors for safety monitoring. The third group of cases looks at how a variety of technologies, such as energy modeling, BIM, and IoT, support sustainability. The fourth group explores new materials and methods, featuring two projects that look at Mass Timber as well as explorations of precast concrete, air source heat pumps, and coordination practices in the MEP trades. Our final group of cases in this collection looks at various topics in design and decision-making with technologies such as HoloLens and BIM, as well as practices of early supplier involvement and policy mandates in multifamily development.
Taken together, this collection reflects the variety of ways to champion innovation in the construction industry. Innovation occurs both with technology as well as through changes in the ways we design, construct, and operate our buildings and infrastructure.
— Enjoy!
